A member of parliament reveals the reasons for the continued oil dispute between Baghdad and ErbilInformation/Baghdad…
Former MP Rasul Radhi confirmed the ongoing dispute between Baghdad and Erbil over oil wells and fields discovered after 2003, noting that the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) considers these wells and fields to be under its jurisdiction and authority, without subjecting them to the authority of the federal government in Baghdad.
Radhi told Al-Maalouma, “There are points of contention between Baghdad and Erbil, as the oil and gas law, which has not yet been enacted, stipulates that oil wells and fields discovered and operational before 2003 fall under the authority of the federal government.” He added, “The Kurds consider that any oil wells and fields discovered after that year fall under the authority of the Kurdistan Region, which has created a point of contention between Baghdad and Erbil.”
He explained that “the Kurds consider most of the oil wells currently in operation, from which oil is marketed and exported, to have been discovered after 2003, and they seek to keep them under their control and authority without subjecting them to the federal government in Baghdad, which has created a point of contention between the two sides.”
