Member of Parliament Amer Abdul-Jabbar stated on Saturday that Saudi Arabia does not object to the re-establishment of the Iraqi oil pipeline on the Red Sea, which was built in the 1980s.
Abdul-Jabbar said in a statement followed by “Mail” that “Iraq has an oil pipeline with Saudi Arabia that was completed in the 1980s. It is an Iraqi pipeline and was built with Iraqi money at a cost of $2.6 billion,” indicating that “oil was loaded from it at the end of the 1980s, but it was confiscated after 1991 by the Saudi side.”
He added, “Since the time of the government of former Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, I have repeatedly raised this issue of the need to approach the Saudi side to restore our pipeline, instead of thinking about building a pipeline to Aqaba and causing a loss of costs,” noting that “this pipeline is ready and on the Red Sea.”
He explained, “I met with the Foreign Minister more than once and reminded him of the need to approach the Saudi side. However, the Foreign Minister told me a few days ago that when he met with the Saudi Foreign Minister, he raised the issue of the Iraqi-Saudi oil pipeline, and the Saudi Foreign Minister’s response was surprising, as he welcomed the idea and told him: ‘There is no objection to experts from both countries sitting down to discuss the issue.’ He asked, ‘Why have we been stating and saying for 23 years that it is necessary to activate the pipeline, and Saudi Arabia does not object to that?'”
He stressed that “the issue is open for discussion, and we can take this step and get our pipeline back, which is better than thinking about building other pipelines at exorbitant costs.”
