A meeting of the coordination framework is expected... the prime ministership is down to three namesThe Coordination Framework is holding its meeting this evening, Monday, to discuss the latest developments and current events, as well as the issue of the prime minister and constitutional requirements. Sources confirm that the Framework will seriously discuss the selection of the next prime minister, with the nomination narrowed down to Maliki, Sudani, and Abadi, despite the announcement of nine names being put forward for the position. These three appear to be the most likely to gain the Framework’s confidence, despite an undeclared conflict over the position between Sudani and Maliki. The outcome of the Framework meeting will reveal whether it will agree on a candidate or postpone the selection until the Kurdish bloc resolves the issue of the presidency.
Former MP Abbas Sarout told Al-Maalomah that “the recent meetings of the Framework’s constituent forces have achieved important results in creating clear understandings regarding the profile of the candidate who will be presented for the next prime minister at the appropriate time through the Council of Representatives. The Framework’s candidate will be presented immediately after the election of the president, in accordance with the specified constitutional timelines, especially since the Framework’s constituent forces, as the largest bloc, will not delay in announcing their candidate.”
Sarout explained that “what is happening within the framework is not a dispute, but rather a difference of opinion that will be resolved in the coming period.”

For his part, Zuhair al-Jalabi, a member of the State of Law Coalition, affirmed that “the coordination framework does not imply any political deadlock regarding the selection of the next prime minister. This matter will be resolved according to the constitutional timelines without any delay or postponement, and the name of the framework’s candidate will be announced when the time is right, according to the established schedule.” He added that “the past few days have witnessed significant progress in the selection of the prime minister among the forces of the coordination framework, and there is now a significant bilateral rapprochement between many of the forces. Therefore, there is no real political deadlock that could hinder the selection and violate the constitutional deadlines. There are new alliances and agreements that will be revealed soon, which will facilitate the process of resolving the selection of the prime minister.”

In a related development, Abu Mithaq al-Masari, a member of the Badr Organization’s political bureau, clarified that “the coordination framework has only proposed three names (Nouri al-Maliki, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, and Haider al-Abadi), and there is no fourth candidate. The media leaks are being stirred up by some individuals who are not involved in the discussions within the coordination framework.”
He continued, “The focus within the coordination framework is on selecting one of these three, while other matters are left to the element of time and the element of surprise, which the coordination framework might resort to by requesting one of the compromise candidates.” He pointed out that “currently, there are no discussions about any candidate other than the three, but the door has been kept open to all possibilities regarding the constitutional deadlines, with a strong commitment to ensuring the formation of the next government within the specified timeframe.”
