A meeting of the coordinating framework is expected... Adherence to Maliki and a decision on the election of the President of the RepublicInformation/Baghdad…
Political circles are anticipating a meeting of the Coordination Framework in the coming hours to finalize the selection of the Prime Minister and schedule a parliamentary session to elect the President of the Republic. This comes after the Kurdish bloc worked to postpone resolving this issue and exceed the constitutional deadlines for choosing the new president due to the lack of consensus among the various parties on a specific candidate for the position. Some political parties assert that the Framework will reaffirm its support for Maliki as Prime Minister, despite statements and speculations from some quarters regarding the possibility of Maliki withdrawing his candidacy.
MP Ali Saber told Al-Maalouma, “The disagreements among the political forces regarding the next Prime Minister persist and have not yet reached a final resolution. There is movement within the Coordination Framework to present a strong figure capable of confronting the current challenges.”
He added, “The coalition sees Nouri al-Maliki, head of the State of Law Coalition, as a strategic choice, given his extensive political and administrative experience, which qualifies him to lead the new government and improve public services and security. Furthermore, the coming phase cannot tolerate experimentation and requires a decisive figure. It is hoped that the next few days will witness a breakthrough in understandings between the political blocs.”
For his part, Badr Bloc MP Abu Turab al-Tamimi confirmed to Al-Maalomah that “the coalition is committed to nominating al-Maliki, considering him a figure with long experience in state administration. The pressures exerted by the United States will not affect Iraqi national decision-making.”
He continued, “The next phase requires a strong figure capable of confronting internal and external challenges, and the coalition sees al-Maliki as the most suitable choice for this stage. Ultimately, the final decision regarding the premiership will remain in the hands of national forces, free from any external dictates, especially since American interventions in Iraqi affairs aim to impose choices that serve its own interests.”
In a related development, political analyst Ibrahim al-Sarraj ruled out the possibility of Maliki withdrawing his candidacy for prime minister, noting that the framework would hold a meeting in the coming hours to decide on the prime ministership and set a date for the presidential election.
Al-Sarraj told Al-Maalomah, “Maliki withdrawing his candidacy for prime minister is unlikely, and it is expected that the coordinating framework will meet in the coming hours to reaffirm its commitment to its candidate.” He added, “The recent speculation about Maliki’s potential withdrawal is nothing more than media hype intended to pressure the two Kurdish parties for their delay in resolving the presidential issue and their failure in this matter.”
He explained that “the framework may decide in its upcoming meeting to set a date for the presidential election, which would then task Maliki with forming the government. Therefore, it is likely that the framework will move towards ending the deadlock and pushing for a resolution to the presidential election.”
