On Monday, a leader in the “Reconstruction and Development” coalition, led by “outgoing” Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, delivered sharp political messages that appeared to be directed at forces within the coordination framework, stressing that the coalition’s project is “clear and successful,” while describing the opponents’ projects as “unknown.”
Qusay Mahbouba said in a written statement received by Shafaq News Agency that his coalition is the “electoral winner at the national level,” and that he accepted working within the framework “out of national responsibility and concern for the stability of the state.”
He added that the constitutional requirements were completed without the election of the Speaker of Parliament and the President of the Republic, considering that the coalition had fulfilled its obligations, while it faced what he described as “discrediting and questioning”.
He continued: “We presented solutions and initiatives, but you met them with rigidity and narrow calculations,” adding that their project is “clear, our candidate is successful, and our goal is Iraq first.”
In a direct escalation, Mahbouba addressed his opponents, saying: “Your project is vague, your candidate is unknown, and your goal is narrow interests that do not resemble the aspirations of the people,” stressing that the people and history will hold everyone accountable for their choices.
Mahbouba concluded by saying that Iraq is “bigger than the maneuvers,” and that their project will continue and will be “more enduring than interests and stronger than all attempts at disruption.”
This comes at a time when the forces of the Coordination Framework are witnessing escalating disagreements regarding the selection of a prime ministerial candidate, after the failure of meetings between the head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, and the outgoing Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, to reach an understanding regarding the withdrawal of one of them from the race.
An informed political source told Shafaq News Agency on Sunday that both sides insisted on their right to run for office, despite attempts to bridge the differences. During later meetings, alternative names were put forward, including former Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and Ihsan al-Awadi, as compromise candidates.
The forces of the Coordination Framework have been experiencing a series of faltering meetings for days, amid continued disagreement over the name of the candidate and the mechanism for his selection, between the option of political consensus or voting within the framework, which threatens to lead to a new political deadlock.
