On Saturday, a delegation from the US Congress, in a meeting with Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani, affirmed their support for Iraq and the protection of the region’s constitutional entity, stressing the importance of Kurdistan as a factor for stability in the region.
The media office of the Kurdistan Region Presidency said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency that “President Nechirvan Barzani met this afternoon with US Senator Lindsey Graham and a delegation accompanying him that included a number of members of Congress, as part of his ongoing meetings within the Munich Security Conference.”
He noted that “the meeting discussed the United States’ relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, and ways to develop joint cooperation between them.”
President Nechirvan Barzani reiterated the Kurdistan Region’s thanks and appreciation for “the continued American support and the support of Congress for Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.”
For its part, the US Congressional delegation emphasized “the importance of the Kurdistan Region’s position as a stabilizing factor in the region,” expressing its support for Iraq, the protection of the Kurdistan Region’s entity, the resolution of outstanding issues between Erbil and Baghdad, and the preservation of the country’s security and stability.
The statement indicated that “the situation in Syria and the rights of the Kurds there formed another focus of the meeting, as President Nechirvan Barzani and the Congressional delegation stressed the need to protect the rights of the Kurds and all components at the present time and in the future constitution of a unified Syria.”
At the conclusion of the meeting, the two sides discussed the latest security developments and the risks of terrorism in the region.
Meanwhile, the regional president met with Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission, as part of his agenda at the Munich Security Conference.
A statement issued by the Presidency of the Region stated that the meeting included discussions on the European Union’s relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, and a discussion of the latest developments in the region.
Both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening joint cooperation, particularly in areas that serve stability and economic development.
The meeting also addressed the situation in Syria, the rights of the Kurds and other groups in that country, as well as the dangers of terrorism and the latest regional developments and challenges facing the Middle East peace process.
For her part, von der Leyen reiterated the European Union’s support for the security and stability of the Kurdistan Region, and praised the efforts of President Nechirvan Barzani and the role of the Kurdistan Region as an important factor for stability in the region.
On the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, the President of the Kurdistan Region also met with Niels Schmid, State Secretary for Defense at the German Federal Ministry of Defense.
The two sides discussed Germany’s relations with Iraq and the Kurdistan Region and ways to develop joint cooperation between them.
President Nechirvan Barzani expressed the Kurdistan Region’s thanks and appreciation for Germany’s continued support in all fields.
For his part, Schmid affirmed that his country will continue to support Iraq and the Kurdistan Region in order to maintain security and stability.
The latest security developments in the region and the threat of terrorism were another focus of the meeting.
