A clash of wills - Parties wage their battles within the political arena to eliminate rivals and seize positionsInformation/Baghdad…
The intensity of the disputes and mutual statements between the various political parties is increasing, especially after the rift that occurred in the voting session on Ali al-Zidi’s cabinet, where some ministries were removed from the voting list and placed in the last sequences to ensure the passage of the portfolios that were intended to be passed and decided first, as some political parties are waging a war and movement to settle scores through the ministerial portfolios in an attempt to win positions or to obstruct opponents from obtaining their desires at the very least, which is what was behind postponing the decision on some ministries until after the Eid holiday.

Former State of Law Coalition MP Rasoul Radhi told Al-Maalomah, “There is a clear targeting of the State of Law Coalition by some political parties and blocs, both within and outside the Shia political sphere, in agreement with the Speaker of Parliament.” He added, “The plan devised against the aforementioned coalition aims to obstruct the allocation of ministerial portfolios to the State of Law Coalition. However, the coming days will witness a resolution to the crisis, especially since the allocated positions remain and will not be given to other parties.” He explained, “The State of Law Coalition cannot be excluded from the political process or marginalized, especially since the coalition’s leader, Nouri al-Maliki, is considered the architect of the political process, and most political parties are aligned with the State of Law Coalition. Furthermore, many parties have withdrawn from the former prime minister’s bloc and joined the new, stronger bloc, which confirms that Maliki is influential on the political scene.”

For his part, Mohammed al-Fahdawi, a member of the Azm Alliance, told Al-Maalomah that “the Progress Party’s acquisition of the parliamentary speakership and the failure to allocate the parliamentary seats designated for the position to this party represents a coup against political partnerships, balances, and the culture of dialogue within the Sunni component and with other political forces.” He indicated that “a decision is pending regarding the continuation of the Political Council, and this matter will be decided after Ali al-Zaidi completes his cabinet with all its portfolios and the candidates nominated for government positions.” He pointed out that “the Azm Alliance is not rushing into any decision and is waiting to see how the cabinet will ultimately be formed. Furthermore, it is considering the level of political partnership with other blocs, and based on the available information, it will decide whether to continue or suspend its membership in the Political Council.”

In a related context, political analyst Qasim al-Tamimi told Al-Maalomah that “the Coordination Framework, being the largest parliamentary bloc, could have maintained its cohesion in every parliamentary session. However, what happened during the vote on the cabinet confirmed the existence of a division within the framework regarding some ministerial candidates.” He continued, “Mohammed al-Halbousi has been playing a significant role in dismantling not only the Coordination Framework but also the Shiite component. He was able to influence some leaders within and outside the framework, and consequently, some ministries did not receive the necessary votes in the parliamentary session to finalize al-Zaidi’s cabinet.” He added, “Al-Halbousi is sponsoring a detrimental project aimed at fracturing the unity of the largest component in the country. Therefore, there is an urgent need for the leaders of the framework and the Shiite component to be aware of these practices by al-Halbousi, which weaken the political process in general and drag Iraq into unnecessary complications.”
