The Azm Alliance, led by Muthanna al-Samarrai, clarified its position today, Tuesday, regarding the nomination of Nouri al-Maliki, the candidate of the Coordination Framework Forces, for the position of Prime Minister.
Alliance leader Mohammed al-Dulaimi told the Al-Maalomah news agency that “the Azm Alliance and prominent Sunni figures informed Maliki during his meeting with the leadership that they would vote for him during the session to elect a new prime minister for the next government, regardless of the outcome of talks between Trump’s special representative to Iraq, Tom Barrack, regarding the position, as the election of the prime minister is an internal matter.”
Al-Dulaimi added that “the moderate Sunni political forces, which had previously rejected the approaches of the head of the Taqaddum Alliance, Mohammed al-Halbousi, and the former head of the Sovereignty Alliance, Khamis al-Khanjar, are prepared to vote for the prime minister candidate chosen by the coordination framework.”
He explained that “the Sunni forces’ position aims to facilitate the government formation process within the specified timeframes,” noting that this stance came after a meeting Maliki held yesterday with Muthanna al-Samarrai and other Sunni leaders.
