The director of Iraq’s ports, Farhan Al-Fartousi, confirmed on Wednesday that the pace of work in receiving ships and vessels and unloading goods and merchandise arriving in the country is proceeding smoothly and safely, noting that supply chains from the Gulf countries have not been affected by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Al-Fartousi told Shafaq News Agency during a field tour he conducted in the ports of Umm Qasr and Khor Al-Zubair, accompanied by the commander of the naval forces, the commander of the Basra police, and the commander of Basra operations, to closely examine the progress of the security plan for Iraq’s ports and to maintain the smooth flow of work.

He added that “the purpose of this tour is to convey a message to the ships in the waiting area that Iraqi ports are safe and operate in accordance with the requirements of the International Maritime Organization.”

He noted that “a rapid mechanism is currently being developed to release goods from the ports, with exceptional procedures to ensure the arrival of goods to the markets, to provide facilities for traders, and to avoid any emergency in light of the current regional circumstances.”

Al-Fartousi confirmed that “supply chains between Iraqi ports and the ports of the Emirates and Qatar are operating normally as they are located beyond the Strait of Hormuz towards Iraq, but as for the ships that must pass through the Strait of Hormuz, they are currently stopped.”
