The Political Bureau of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan announced on Tuesday details of a meeting it held, chaired by Bafel Talabani, which addressed a number of political and security issues, including the content of a telephone call that took place between Talabani and US President Donald Trump.
A statement issued by the political office, which was reviewed by Shafaq News Agency, stated that the meeting was held on Tuesday, March 3, in the presence of the head of the Patriotic Union, where a number of key topics on the agenda were discussed.
The statement explained that Talabani provided a detailed explanation of his meeting with Tom Barrack, President Trump’s special envoy, and with Mazloum Abdi, where the discussion revolved around ensuring the drafting of a Syrian constitution that guarantees the rights of all components, while emphasizing the implementation of the January 29 agreement signed between Syria and the Syrian Democratic Forces.
The statement added that another focus of the meeting was on discussing the war, confrontations and security tensions, noting that the Patriotic Union believes that the best solutions lie in returning to the negotiating table and addressing issues through understanding and diplomacy, stressing that the party’s priority is to protect the lives and property of the citizens of the Kurdistan Region and to preserve the sovereignty of Iraq.
The statement quoted Talabani as affirming the Patriotic Union’s readiness to utilize all its extensive and influential relationships to consolidate security and stability and support the development process in Iraq in particular and the region in general.
The meeting also touched on the content of the telephone call between Trump and Talabani, in which the US president, according to the statement, reviewed his country’s objectives in this war, expressing his appreciation for the role of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan in Iraq.
The statement indicated that Talabani explained that Trump presented an opportunity to understand American objectives more deeply and to open the door to dialogue regarding joint support for building a strong partnership between the United States and Iraq.
