A security source reported on Monday that security reinforcements had arrived at the suspension bridge near the Green Zone in central Baghdad, with concrete barriers being erected on the bridge and its sides in anticipation of any emergency in the coming hours, amid ongoing protests against the US embassy.
The source told Shafaq News Agency that these measures come in conjunction with protest demonstrations taking place on the roads leading to the Green Zone, where the US embassy is located, in response to the US-Israeli strikes that targeted Iran, and the subsequent announcement of the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and a number of other leaders.
On Sunday, security forces resorted to using tear gas and water cannons to disperse protesters who tried to advance towards the Green Zone, according to the same source.
The Joint Operations Command had announced earlier yesterday that a number of members of the security forces were injured during a clash at the suspension bridge leading to the Green Zone with protesters over the assassination of Ali Khamenei.
She explained that armed men among the demonstrators opened fire and burned caravans and a wheel, while the forces affirmed their commitment to restraint and not using firearms, noting that three people involved had been arrested and others were being pursued according to legal procedures.
