Former Parliament Rapporteur Mohammed al-Khalidi confirmed on Saturday that more than 100 rumors have circulated on news platforms and websites recently regarding the government’s inability to pay this month’s salaries, while the reality on the ground completely contradicts these claims.
Speaking to Al-Maalouma, al-Khalidi said, “Iraq is a country rich in resources and capabilities, and the current government is proceeding with an economic reform plan that is being implemented in several phases. This cannot be achieved overnight due to accumulated problems spanning decades.”
He added, “The transition from a rentier economy to a diversified economy requires time, especially given the long list of laws that need amendment and revision, whether in economic or financial matters.”
He pointed out that “over the past few weeks, more than 100 rumors have emerged claiming the government’s inability to pay this month’s salaries, but the current situation on the ground proves the exact opposite.” He explained that “this indicates the existence of a machine attempting to mislead public opinion, sow confusion, and increase anxiety.”
Al-Khalidi affirmed that “government efforts are focused on maintaining financial momentum and ensuring the regular distribution of salaries,” emphasizing “the necessity of a clear economic roadmap that contributes to correcting the course of the country’s financial and economic situation, increasing the percentage of non-oil revenues, and transitioning from a principle of total dependence on oil to an open economy capable of withstanding the repercussions of declining oil prices in global markets.”
