A leader in the Azm Alliance, Mohammed al-Dulaimi, revealed on Saturday that the alliance’s leadership is committed to Nouri al-Maliki, the candidate of the Coordination Framework, and will vote for him during the session to elect the new prime minister.
Al-Dulaimi told Al-Maalomah News Agency that the Azm Alliance and prominent Sunni figures informed al-Maliki, during a recent meeting, of their agreement to vote for him in the upcoming prime ministerial election session, regardless of the outcome of talks held by the US Special Representative to Iraq, Tom Barrack, considering the selection of the head of government an internal Iraqi matter.
He added that “moderate Sunni political forces, who reject the approaches of Mohammed al-Halbousi and Khamis al-Khanjar, have expressed their readiness to vote for the Coordination Framework’s candidate for prime minister.”
He explained that “the Sunni forces’ position aims to facilitate the government formation process within the specified timeframe,” noting that this stance followed a meeting held yesterday by al-Maliki with Muthanna al-Samarrai, head of the Azm Alliance, and a number of Sunni leaders.
