MP Dhikra al-Rudaini, from the State of Law Coalition, revealed on Thursday that there are “near-final” understandings between Kurdish forces leading to the nomination of Nizar Amidi for the presidency. She indicated that the coming days may witness an official resolution to this matter.
Al-Rudaini told the Information Agency that “dialogues between the two Kurdish parties (the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan) have reached advanced stages to overcome the political deadlock regarding the position of the guardian of the constitution,” explaining that “Nizar Amidi’s name is currently being put forward as a compromise candidate who enjoys broad acceptance.”
She added that “there is near-consensus within the Kurdish political establishment to pass this nomination to ensure a unified stance in Baghdad,” noting that “the Coordination Framework and the rest of the political forces support any agreement reached by the Kurds to expedite the completion of constitutional requirements.”
Al-Rudaini pointed out that “resolving the issue of the presidency will directly pave the way for tasking the candidate of the largest bloc with forming the new government, which is what the Iraqi public is waiting for to end the political stagnation.”
It is worth noting that the dispute over the presidency was the most significant obstacle in the political landscape due to differing visions between Erbil and Sulaimaniyah, before the recent signs of a breakthrough emerged.
