The Reconstruction and Development Coalition, led by Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, stated on Thursday that the continued delay in electing a president for nearly two months after the election of the Speaker of Parliament and his two deputies represents a “clear violation of the constitutional timelines stipulated in the Iraqi Constitution,” threatening to resort to all available constitutional means and procedures if what it described as the state of obstruction continues.

The parliamentary bloc of the coalition said in a statement, which was received by Shafaq News Agency, that “nearly two months have passed since the election of the Speaker of Parliament and his two deputies, and in light of the continued delay in electing the President of the Republic, which constitutes a clear violation of the constitutional timelines stipulated by the Iraqi Constitution.”

The Speaker of Parliament called for “accelerating the convening of a session dedicated to electing the President of the Republic during the coming week, in order to end the scene of exceeding constitutional deadlines and obstructing the resolution of basic entitlements, and to bear its national responsibility in ending the state of paralysis that has negatively affected the performance of state institutions.”

The Kurdish forces also called for a decision on their candidate for the presidency before the session is held, in order to allow progress in completing the rest of the constitutional requirements, foremost among them the formation of a fully empowered government in accordance with the election results, capable of providing services to citizens, protecting the interests of the country, and consolidating political and institutional stability.

She stressed that “the continued existence of a government with limited powers constitutes a direct harm to our people and to the work of the state and its institutions,” noting that “if this obstruction continues, the Reconstruction and Development Bloc will resort to using all available constitutional means and procedures to ensure an end to the stalemate and to maintain the correct constitutional path.”
