Ali al-Fatlawi, a leader in the Reconstruction and Development Alliance, revealed on Wednesday that the alliance is moving towards finalizing the selection of an alternative candidate to Nouri al-Maliki for the position of Prime Minister, confirming that the official announcement of the new name will be made next week.
Al-Fatlawi told the Information Agency, “The forces within the Coordination Framework are undergoing intensive discussions, not due to personal differences, but rather dictated by the supreme national interest in light of the dangerous escalation of security in the region.”
He added, “Replacing the Alliance’s candidate, Nouri al-Maliki, with another figure has become a necessity imposed by political realities and current circumstances,” noting that “the Alliance’s leaders will agree on the identity of the alternative candidate and officially announce it next week.”
Al-Fatlawi pointed out that “this move aims to contain the crises and ensure the smooth formation of the government in a manner commensurate with the scale of the economic and security challenges facing the country.”
It is worth noting that despite the considerable influence wielded by Nouri al-Maliki, head of the State of Law Coalition, recent shifts in the positions of the forces within the coalition indicate greater flexibility in proposing alternatives. This coincides with parallel talks taking place in Erbil between the two Kurdish parties, the KDP and the PUK, to decide on a presidential candidate. This makes next week pivotal in shaping the executive and legislative branches of government in the country.
