Political analyst Wael Al-Rikabi confirmed today that talk of deadlines or external pressures to withdraw the nomination of the head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri Al-Maliki, for the premiership is inaccurate, stressing that the nomination decision is an internal matter decided by the forces of the Coordination Framework.
Al-Rikabi told Al-Maalouma News Agency, “What is being circulated about granting external parties a deadline for the Coordination Framework to withdraw al-Maliki’s nomination is not based on any factual data, and there is no external deadline in this regard,” explaining that “any decision related to the prime minister candidate is issued exclusively by the Framework.”
He added that “if there are genuine American messages objecting to al-Maliki’s nomination, then the Coordination Framework alone has the right to decide whether to keep or replace its candidate, without being subject to external dictates,” noting that “the Framework’s failure to address changing the prime minister candidate in its last statement means that al-Maliki remains its only candidate to this moment.”
Al-Rikabi asked: “If al-Maliki does not meet the standards of the current stage, why did the Coordination Framework nominate him in the first place?” He considered that “the nomination came after internal political calculations and agreements between the forces of the Framework.”
Regarding the presidency, he explained that “the names being circulated, such as Fuad Hussein and Nizar Amidi, are not actually being considered as final candidates so far,” noting that “the decision on this position is still subject to understandings between the Kurdish forces first.”
He also pointed out that “the names being circulated for the premiership, such as al-Sudani, al-Abadi, and al-Shatri, do not have a real chance given the framework’s adherence to its current candidate,” stressing that “the coordinating framework will not give up on nominating al-Maliki at this stage.”
Al-Rikabi indicated that “the next stage may witness important political changes, whether at the level of internal, regional and international positions,” expecting that “we will soon hear of a change in the American position on Maliki, in line with the new balance equation in Iraq.”
Al-Rikabi concluded by saying, “Ultimately, the decision is purely Iraqi, and the coordinating framework will proceed with its candidate unless major political understandings occur that alter the equation,” indicating the continued tension that precedes any government formation.
