The issue of deciding the presidency and the Iranian-American escalation topped the agenda of the coordination framework talks on Monday evening, where the need to finalize the formation of the new government was emphasized, without mentioning the candidate for its leadership, the leader of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki.

A statement from the framework, received by Shafaq News Agency, indicated that the leaders of the coordination held their 263rd periodic meeting at the headquarters of the Supreme Islamic Council of Iraq, Humam Hamoudi, to follow up on the latest local and regional developments.

According to the statement, the participants stressed Iraq’s commitment to international resolutions, particularly Resolution 833, and its keenness to build strong relations with the countries of the world, especially neighboring countries. They emphasized Iraq’s right to guarantee its national entitlements and the rights of its people, including depositing maritime border maps with the United Nations.

Regarding internal affairs, the attendees stressed their keenness on the unity and cohesion of the coordinating framework, in continuation of fulfilling the repeated trust given to it by the voters in the elections.

The coordinating framework called on the brothers in the two major Kurdish parties to resolve the issue of the presidency in order to preserve national entitlements.

Regarding the escalation between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the United States, the Coordination Framework called for prioritizing dialogue and capitalizing on the positive negotiating climate in Geneva, because war only produces bigger problems.

Earlier today, a responsible political source revealed that the leaders of the Coordination Framework will hold a meeting this evening to decide on the nomination of the head of the State of Law Coalition for the next government.

The source told Shafaq News Agency that “the coordination framework will hold its periodic meeting this evening at the home of the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council, Humam Hamoudi, to discuss a number of crucial political issues, foremost among them being expediting the process of forming the new Iraqi government, in addition to discussing the issue of nominating Maliki, in light of the American position that publicly rejects this nomination.”

The source, who asked not to be named, said that “the meeting will focus on assessing the repercussions of continuing to nominate Maliki on the relationship between the Coordination Framework and the US administration and the international community in general, as well as discussing options for withdrawing the nomination or continuing to support it, while studying the expected scenarios for the political, security and economic challenges that may result from any decision that is taken.”

He added that “the meeting of the coordination framework comes at a sensitive time that is witnessing a diplomatic and field escalation in the region, which makes the Iraqi position on the formation of the government a subject of local and regional monitoring, especially in light of the international and internal pressures on the political parties to overcome the political stalemate.”
