MP Bassem al-Gharabi warned on Monday against the caretaker government’s continued signing of what he described as “strategic and large” contracts, stressing that these actions lack legal and constitutional basis. He called on Parliament to exercise its oversight role to halt these procedures.
Al-Gharabi told the Information Agency that “the current caretaker government has exceeded the powers granted to it under the Constitution and the Cabinet’s internal regulations, which limit its duties to managing day-to-day affairs only.” He pointed out that “the government’s signing of investment contracts at this time raises serious questions about its purpose.”
He added that “signing large contracts is fundamentally based on the existence of a fully empowered government that enjoys the confidence of Parliament, which is responsible for long-term financial and legal obligations.” He explained that “passing such contracts in the absence of genuine oversight could open the door to dubious deals that harm the interests of the state and burden future budgets with ill-considered commitments.”
Al-Gharabi stressed “the urgent need for the House of Representatives to intervene through its relevant committees to halt all current procedures and contracts,” noting that “remaining silent about these violations will create illegal practices that undermine the prestige of constitutional institutions and leave public funds vulnerable to irresponsible and arbitrary decisions.”
