Jassim Mohammed Jaafar, a leader in the State of Law Coalition, confirmed on Thursday that the nomination of the coalition’s leader, Nouri al-Maliki, for the position of Prime Minister was a decision made by a majority of the forces within the Coordination Framework.
Jaafar told the Information Agency, “The selection of al-Maliki as the candidate for the position was approved by a majority of the Framework’s leaders, especially after the head of the Euphrates Bloc, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, withdrew his candidacy in favor of al-Maliki at that time.”
He added, “Al-Maliki will not personally withdraw his candidacy under any circumstances, and his bloc will not withdraw to the opposition,” emphasizing that “there is no intention to withdraw or resort to the opposition should the nomination be changed.”
He pointed out that “the only entity authorized to change this course is the majority of the Coordination Framework, should they decide to change their opinion regarding the candidate for the next government.”
