Hussein al-Sadiq, a member of the State of Law Coalition, confirmed today that the coalition’s leader, Nouri al-Maliki, is not seeking any mediation from Washington to assume the premiership. He indicated that talk of such moves is “inaccurate and unfounded.”
Al-Sadiq told the Information Agency that “al-Maliki is relying on internal political understandings within the Coordination Framework forces regarding the nomination, not on any external channels or pressures.” He explained that “involving international parties in this matter constitutes unjustified interference in Iraqi affairs.”
He added that “some statements issued by American circles regarding the prime ministerial candidate are surprising, and even more surprising is the adoption and promotion of these positions by some local politicians.” He asserted that “resolving constitutional entitlements must be done according to national frameworks and agreements among the political forces.”
He pointed out that “the current stage requires the Kurdish forces to expedite the resolution of the presidential issue, given the essential role this position plays in fulfilling constitutional requirements and forming the next government.”
This statement comes at a time of escalating political dialogue between various blocs to resolve the issue of top positions, amidst internal anticipation of the outcomes of these agreements. Political forces have repeatedly stressed the need to finalize these appointments quickly to avoid any constitutional vacuum or further complications in the political landscape.
