MP Ali Abdul Kadhim expressed his regret on Saturday that Kurdish parties have not reached a final agreement on a presidential candidate, warning of a potential political deadlock.
Abdul Kadhim told Al-Maalouma that “Kurdish conflicts over the presidency and the failure to agree on a specific candidate are the main reasons for the delay in forming the government,” warning of a “political impasse that the political process may face if the Kurdish-Kurdish dispute over the position continues.”
He added that “the forces within the Coordination Framework are in agreement on nominating Nouri al-Maliki, leader of the State of Law Coalition, for prime minister,” noting that “the announcement of the government formation is contingent upon the Kurdish parties resolving the dispute over the presidency. ”
He clarified that “the delay in announcing the government is not due to the issue of choosing the prime minister, as some political figures are suggesting, in an attempt to alleviate pressure on the Kurdish disputes regarding the nomination of the presidential candidate.”
Earlier, Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein stated that the delay in forming the government was due to disagreements over the nomination of the prime minister, stressing the need to take Washington’s objection to al-Maliki seriously.
