Economic expert Dr. Safwan Qusay affirmed the possibility of controlling prices and preventing their rise by activating government subsidies on essential goods and materials needed by citizens.
Qusay told Al-Maalouma, “The increase in customs duties will generate revenues for the government reaching $5 billion after the implementation of the new customs system. It is possible that the incoming government will allocate $1 billion to subsidize a number of goods that directly impact citizens and consumers.”
He added, “The incoming government can subsidize wheat, cooking oil, rice, meat, and other essential goods through a hypermarket system, thus ensuring control over the informal market.”
He explained that “the market will not change drastically, as the dollar is still being sold to importers at 1300 dinars. However, there is price inflation under the pretext that some border crossings are not under control, which leads to a doubling of price increases. This necessitates that the Ministry of Trade and the Ministry of Planning contribute to monitoring prices and prevent merchants from manipulating them.”
