Zuhair Al-Jalabi, a member of the State of Law Coalition, confirmed that “the tweet published by Trump regarding his rejection of the head of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri Al-Maliki, does not represent an influential political stance, describing it as a cloud that has passed.”
Al-Jalabi told Al-Maalomah News Agency, “The political process in Iraq is decided within the parliament and by the will of the representatives, not through statements or tweets issued from outside the country.” He stressed that “whoever does not want Maliki to assume the position of Prime Minister should express that by not voting for him in the House of Representatives.”
He added that “talk of an American veto on al-Maliki assuming the premiership is baseless,” explaining that “the United States does not have the ability today to impose its choices as it did in the past,” in light of the current political balances and regional and international changes.
Al-Jalabi pointed out that “the State of Law Coalition is operating within constitutional and legal frameworks, and that any candidate for prime minister is subject to the equation of the parliamentary majority and national agreements, and not to external pressures or media positions.”
Al-Jalabi concluded by emphasizing that “the next phase requires respecting Iraq’s political sovereignty and leaving the decision to choose the prime minister to the elected forces within parliament, free from any external interference or pressure.”
