MP Youssef al-Kalabi warned on Monday of the repercussions of continued Kurdish-Kurdish disputes on the stability of the political process, calling on the forces in the region to respect constitutional deadlines and resolve the issue of the presidential candidate to end the deadlock.
Al-Kalabi told Al-Maalouma that “the ongoing conflict between the two main parties (the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the Kurdistan Democratic Party) over the presidency has become a real obstacle to fulfilling national obligations and has negatively impacted the formation of the new government.”
He added that “the coordination framework has completely finalized its position regarding the prime minister candidate and is now awaiting agreement among the Kurdish parties on a compromise candidate or a unified vision to proceed with the election session,” stressing that “the delay is no longer serving anyone’s interests.”
Al-Kalabi pointed out that “exceeding the deadlines stipulated by the constitution as a result of the political rivalry between the two parties could drag the country into legal chaos and instability,” calling on the Kurdish parties to “prioritize the public interest and move beyond the language of imposing wills in order to reach an agreement that ends the current stalemate.”
