Security expert Sabah al-Akeeli revealed on Monday details of what he described as a “sensitive” agreement between the Iraqi government and the international coalition forces regarding the transfer of thousands of ISIS members detained in Syria. He emphasized that Iraq will not bear “a single penny” of the financial consequences of this matter.
Al-Akeeli told Al-Maalouma that “the agreement, which stipulates the transfer of approximately 7,000 ISIS members, includes explicit clauses obligating the international coalition forces to bear all costs and expenses related to their accommodation and trial, without placing any additional burden on the Iraqi budget.”
He added that “all those transferred will be subject to the authority of the Iraqi judiciary, particularly those involved in crimes committed on Iraqi soil.” He further explained that “for those whose involvement in crimes within the country has not been proven, arrangements will be made to hand them over to their countries of origin in accordance with established international legal procedures.”
Al-Akeeli explained that “the handover process came as an Iraqi initiative aimed at resolving this complex issue in cooperation with the international community, to ensure control over them and prevent their return to activities that threaten the security of the region and the world.”
