On Saturday, the State of Law Coalition, headed by Nouri al-Maliki, decided to boycott the Al-Ahd satellite channel, which belongs to the Asaib Ahl al-Haq movement led by Qais al-Khazali, for supporting the positions of figures opposed to al-Maliki’s nomination for the next federal government.
Informed sources had previously revealed that the Asaib Ahl al-Haq movement and the National Wisdom Movement, led by Ammar al-Hakim, opposed al-Maliki’s nomination for the aforementioned position within the coordination framework that includes the ruling Shiite political forces in Iraq.
Shafaq News Agency’s correspondent quoted an official source in the State of Law coalition as saying that an official decision was issued by the coalition leadership to boycott Al-Ahd channel because of its alignment with and promotion of the positions of the head of the “Progress” party, Muhammad al-Halbousi, and controversial figures against the Coordination Framework’s candidate for Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki.
Al-Halbousi recently appeared in an interview on a local satellite channel, during which he explicitly announced his opposition to the nomination of Nouri al-Maliki for the position of Prime Minister of the next government, thus supporting the American position that rejects the head of the State of Law Coalition assuming the position.
The head of the “Progress” party attributed his rejection of Maliki to the deterioration of the security situation and the occurrence of political tensions in the country during Maliki’s two consecutive terms in office from 2006 to 2014. His second term witnessed the control of ISIS over areas estimated at a third of Iraq in mid-2014.
The Shiite Coordination Framework had announced, on January 24, its nomination of former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to assume the presidency of the next government.
A few days later, US President Donald Trump declared that the return of former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to the premiership was “something that should not be allowed,” arguing that Iraq had “slid into poverty and chaos” during his previous term.
