Kurdish politician Abu Bakr Karwan confirmed that the continued obstruction of the presidential election process is a clear violation of constitutional entitlements, calling on the judiciary to speak out regarding the obstruction, in light of the escalating disputes between the two main Kurdish parties.
Karwan told Al-Maalomah News Agency, “No political party has the right to obstruct constitutional entitlements, including the election of the President of the Republic, under any pretext whatsoever,” stressing that “the Constitution has drawn clear paths for resolving these issues and they cannot be bypassed.”
He added that “the ongoing disputes between the two Kurdish parties over the presidency have contributed to prolonging the political crisis and have directly affected the completion of the formation of constitutional authorities in the country.”
He pointed out that “the current stage requires the Kurdish forces, especially the two main parties, to adhere to the principle of consensus and to prioritize the public interest over partisan conflicts, in order to resolve the issue of the presidency and end the deadlock.”
He explained that “the continued disruption may open the door to political and legal repercussions, and put the political process to complex tests, which calls for clear constitutional and judicial intervention to protect the democratic path.”
This proposal comes at a time when the political arena is witnessing a rise in calls to respect constitutional timelines, amidst assertions that Kurdish consensus is the essential gateway to ending the presidential crisis and fulfilling political obligations.
