On Tuesday, MP Duha al-Bahadli, from the National Approach bloc, confirmed that the coordination framework had given the two Kurdish parties, the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union, 48 hours to decide on a candidate for the position of President of the Republic.

Al-Bahadli told Shafaq News Agency that “the Coordination Framework delegation, during its meeting with Kurdish leaders in Erbil and Sulaymaniyah, did not reach an agreement on choosing a candidate for the position of President of the Republic.”

She explained that “the framework delegation gave the Kurdish brothers in the Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union a deadline of 48 hours to decide on the position of President of the Republic by agreeing on one of the candidates.”

Al-Bahadli also pointed out that, “The Kurds are throwing the ball of delay in deciding the position of President of the Republic into the court of the Coordination Framework because of the American objection to Nouri al-Maliki, the Framework’s candidate for the position of Prime Minister.”

She explained that “there is movement and contacts between the framework and the Kurds to resolve the issue of the position of President of the Republic, and it is expected that the session to elect the president will be held next Thursday.”

Yesterday, Monday, a high-level delegation from the Coordination Framework, including the head of the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, the Secretary-General of the Badr Organization, Hadi al-Amiri, the head of the Foundation Coalition, Mohsen al-Mandalawi, and the Secretary-General of the Coordination Framework, Abbas Radhi, visited the cities of Erbil and Sulaymaniyah to discuss the resolution of the presidential election and the start of steps to form the new federal government.

Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani and a delegation from the Coordination Framework discussed finalizing the election of the president and forming the new federal government. A statement from Barzani’s residence, received by Shafaq News Agency, indicated that he received a high-level delegation from the Coordination Framework.

During the meeting, the political situation in Iraq was highlighted, along with the steps related to the political process and the election of the President of the Republic, as well as the formation of the new Iraqi federal government.

Regarding the issue of the presidency, Barzani stressed that the position of president is the share of the Kurds, and a specific mechanism for electing him must be established and confirmed, in order to avoid the political process becoming complicated with every election, by choosing the presidential candidate according to that mechanism.

Meanwhile, the Iraqi caretaker Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, and the head of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan party, Bafel Talabani, stressed on Monday evening the importance of resolving the issue of the presidency and proceeding with completing the constitutional requirements.
