Independent politician Haider Al-Lami confirmed that the recent positions of the Progress Party, especially its announcement of not participating in any government headed by Nouri Al-Maliki, cannot be separated from calculations of political interests, stressing that the party does not represent the Sunni component as it claims.
Al-Lami told Al-Maalouma News Agency, “The recent positions of the Progress Party, especially its announcement that it will not participate in any government headed by Nouri al-Maliki, cannot be separated from calculations of political interests. Going to the opposition may be a respectable position, but the problem with Progress lies in its lack of consistency in positions, as it has become accustomed to changing its rhetoric overnight according to political circumstances.”
He added that “the Progress Party does not speak on behalf of the Sunnis, but rather expresses itself only as a political party. Moreover, this position does not have a consensus even within its bloc, as a number of its deputies reject it.”
Al-Lami pointed out that “representing the various groups is not achieved through temporary media statements, but rather through clear and consistent positions.”
