Iraq has entered the list of the largest central banks purchasing gold during the past year, according to data issued by the World Gold Council, in a move that reflects the country’s trend towards strengthening its reserves of the yellow metal as a safe haven in light of global economic fluctuations.
The data showed that Iraq ranked eighth globally, after the Central Bank of Iraq’s purchases of gold reached about 11.9 tons during 2025, thus placing it among the top ten countries globally in this field.
Poland topped the list with purchases of 101.9 tons, followed by Kazakhstan with 56.9 tons, then Brazil with 42.7 tons, while Azerbaijan came in fourth with 38.2 tons. China ranked fifth with purchases of 26.7 tons, followed by Turkey with 26.6 tons, and then the Czech Republic with 20.4 tons.
The list also included Cambodia with purchases of 7.9 tons and Uzbekistan with 7.7 tons, amid a growing global trend among central banks to boost gold reserves and reduce reliance on foreign currencies.
