On Saturday, Nouri al-Maliki, head of the State of Law Coalition, affirmed his commitment to running for the position of Prime Minister in the next Iraqi government, despite the explicit rejection of this by US President Donald Trump.
This came in response to questions from journalists via the media communication window, regarding the assignment by the largest bloc of its candidate to form the government, in reference to the Shiite coordination framework, and its nomination of Maliki to head that government.
In response to the questions, Maliki said, “What the successive elections have produced confirms that the Iraqi people and their institutions concerned with building the state have been inspired by the meanings of democracy, freedom, and political partnership.” He added, “From this standpoint, we affirm that we will not abandon this achievement, and we will not compromise the right of the Iraqi people to choose whomever they trust and whom they see as competent to lead the stage.”
He added, “We respect our national will and our independent decision, and we look forward to others respecting this decision as we respect their will in managing their affairs.”
Al-Maliki continued, saying, “The choice of our government and our leaders is a national matter that must be respected, just as we respect the choices of others. In this atmosphere, we look forward to establishing balanced political, economic, and security relations with all regional and major countries, especially those that have cooperated with us and will cooperate in the future, on the basis of partnership and common interests, far from any interference or negative relations.”
The prime ministerial candidate concluded his statement by saying, “Respecting our will, our democracy, and our people’s right to choose their political system and leaders through constitutional institutions is a firm principle for us, and we will proceed with adopting this will and will not back down from it.”
It is worth noting that US President Donald Trump expressed his rejection of the nomination of Nouri al-Maliki, leader of the State of Law Coalition, for the premiership and formation of the new government in statements made last Tuesday, which provoked reactions from the political blocs within the coordination framework.
