An official source in Anbar province revealed on Friday that the publication of former US President Donald Trump’s tweet in which he expressed his rejection of the nomination of Nouri al-Maliki, the Coordination Framework’s candidate, for the premiership, cost political parties hostile to al-Maliki about $35 million.

The source explained to Al-Maalomah News Agency that “the head of the Progress Alliance, Mohammed al-Halbousi, in coordination with Sunni and Shiite political parties, paid $35 million to a company owned by Mark Savia in exchange for publishing Trump’s tweet rejecting al-Maliki’s nomination for the premiership.”

The source added that “these parties also contacted a number of Gulf states that have close ties with the Trump administration to mediate with them and reject al-Maliki’s nomination, and are prepared to pay additional sums of money in hard currency to ensure that his nomination is not approved.”

The source confirmed that “political parties played a pivotal role in garnering international support for rejecting Maliki, in exchange for substantial sums of money paid to intermediaries, who are among Maliki’s most prominent opponents in the political process.”
