Political parties within the coordination framework expected on Wednesday that today’s meeting of the framework would lead to solutions to the crisis of naming the next prime minister, in a way that preserves the country’s sovereignty and keeps it away from the adventures of US President Donald Trump, who is threatening sanctions or war if the leader of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri al-Maliki, heads the next government for the third time.

A source within the Coordination Framework told Shafaq News Agency that “all the leaders and commanders of the Coordination Framework will attend the meeting at the home of the Coordination Framework’s candidate for the premiership to discuss the repercussions of Trump’s message expressing his rejection of naming Maliki as Prime Minister. This is the first time the US administration has publicly declared its position regarding the formation of the government.”

The source continued: “Previously, the messages were secret, but during Trump’s era they became public. Therefore, the framework meeting will discuss the mechanism for responding to Washington in a way that preserves Iraq’s right to manage its internal affairs without interference, taking into account the will of the voters and is consistent with the nature of the stage that is witnessing rapid changes, including that the issue of voting on the framework’s candidate for the premiership and his cabinet be transferred to the political sphere, meaning that the deciding factor in that vote will be within the parliament.”

The source added: “If an alternative candidate is chosen, the opportunity or the ball will not return to the caretaker Prime Minister, Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani, considering that the one who withdraws and gives up his candidacy is not re-nominated since he withdrew of his own volition, and therefore a new candidate will be chosen or a compromise candidate will be chosen.”

Meanwhile, MP Mukhtar al-Moussawi, representing the Coordination Framework, hopes that the meeting of Shiite leaders will lead to a positive decision.

Al-Moussawi told Shafaq News Agency: “I hope that the leaders of the framework will make the appropriate decision that will positively affect the Iraqi reality, away from threats and sanctions.”

For his part, Nasim Abdullah, a leader in the Iqtidaar Party, confirmed to Shafaq News Agency that “the leaders of the coordination framework will discuss in detail the file of the next government’s presidency at the meeting,” indicating that “all options are available to avoid the adventures of US President Trump in a way that preserves Iraq’s sovereignty and keeps it away from the conflicts taking place in the region.”

The Islamic Dawa Party had warned earlier on Wednesday that the Coordination Framework was opening a “loophole” in its decision that could drag the country into further complications, recalling the days of bombings and assassinations, in response to US President Donald Trump’s statement rejecting Nouri al-Maliki’s nomination for the premiership.

The party said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, “The largest parliamentary bloc, as a constitutional and democratic entitlement, exercised its legal and political right to nominate whomever it deemed suitable to head the Council of Ministers and form the new government. It was hoped that the process would continue to fulfill this constitutional entitlement on Tuesday, had it not been for the postponement of the session to elect the President of the Republic.”

This stance comes amid escalating domestic political reactions to US President Donald Trump’s statements regarding the nomination of Maliki to head the next government.

Trump said Tuesday evening, in a post on the Truth Social platform, that the return of former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to the premiership is “something that should not be allowed,” considering that Iraq “slid into poverty and chaos” during his previous term.

Trump added that the United States would stop providing aid to Iraq if Maliki were re-elected, warning that this would undermine Iraq’s chances of “success, prosperity, or freedom,” and concluded his post by saying: “Let’s make Iraq great again.”

The Shiite Coordination Framework announced last Saturday evening, January 24, its nomination of former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to head the next government.
