The Islamic Dawa Party warned on Wednesday that the Coordination Framework was not opening a “loophole” in its decision that could drag the country into further complications, recalling the days of bombings and assassinations, in response to US President Donald Trump’s statement rejecting Nouri al-Maliki’s nomination for prime minister.

The party said in a statement received by Shafaq News Agency, “The largest parliamentary bloc, as a constitutional and democratic entitlement, exercised its legal and political right to nominate whomever it deemed suitable to head the Council of Ministers and form the new government. It was hoped that the process would continue to fulfill this constitutional entitlement on Tuesday, had it not been for the postponement of the session to elect the President of the Republic.”

He added that “Nouri al-Maliki is a national political figure and one of the pillars of the political process. He bore heavy responsibilities under the weight of the harsh conditions that Iraq went through after 2003. He imposed security and stability and restored the state’s authority, without relying on a narrow political or ideological agenda, at a time when terrorists were roaming freely in the streets of Baghdad and the rest of the Iraqi cities, where hundreds of innocent victims were falling daily, dozens of cars were being blown up, assassinations were being carried out, and other criminal acts were being committed.”

He added that “respecting Iraq’s sovereignty and independence requires respecting the political choice of its people, and condemning interference by any party or country in its internal affairs, in a manner of dictation and threat, as this is something rejected by Iraqis and their national forces.”

“We believe that opening a loophole in the framework decision has dragged the political process into this complication, and this will have repercussions on more than one level, which necessitates calling on the good political forces from all components to defend the independent Iraqi national decision,” calling on “the coordinating framework to bear its responsibility before the people regarding this blatant interference that has stirred public opinion, in a dangerous precedent that strikes at the principle of sovereignty and weakens the national decision.”

This stance comes amid escalating domestic political reactions to US President Donald Trump’s statements regarding the nomination of Maliki to head the next government .

Trump said Tuesday evening, in a post on the Truth Social platform, that the return of former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to the premiership is “something that should not be allowed,” considering that Iraq “slid into poverty and chaos” during his previous term .

Trump added that the United States would stop providing aid to Iraq if Maliki were re-elected, warning that this would undermine Iraq’s chances of “success, prosperity, or freedom,” and concluded his post by saying: “Let’s make Iraq great again .”

The Shiite Coordination Framework announced last Saturday evening, January 24, its nomination of former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to head the next government.
