Nouri al-Maliki, leader of the State of Law Coalition, announced his categorical rejection of US President Donald Trump’s statements regarding his nomination for the Iraqi premiership, stressing that he will continue to run based on the decision of the Coordination Framework.

Al-Maliki said in a statement, “We categorically reject the blatant American interference in Iraq’s internal affairs, and we consider it a violation of its sovereignty, contrary to the democratic system in Iraq after 2003, and an infringement on the decision of the Coordinating Framework for choosing its candidate for the position of Prime Minister.”

He added, “Dialogue between countries is the only political option for dealing with them, not resorting to the language of dictates and threats.”

He stressed that “out of respect for the national will and the decision of the Coordinating Framework guaranteed by the Iraqi Constitution, I will continue to work until we reach the end, in a way that achieves the higher interests of the Iraqi people.”

This stance comes amid escalating domestic political reactions to Trump’s statements, in which he said in a post published Tuesday evening on the “Truth Social” platform that Maliki’s return to the premiership “is something that should not be allowed,” considering that Iraq “slid into poverty and chaos” during his previous term.

Trump added that the United States would stop providing aid to Iraq if Maliki were re-elected, warning that this would undermine Iraq’s chances of “success, prosperity, or freedom,” and concluded by saying, “Let’s make Iraq great again.”

The Shiite Coordination Framework announced on Saturday evening, January 24, the nomination of Nouri al-Maliki to head the next Iraqi government.
