The Rights Movement responded on Wednesday to statements by US President Donald Trump regarding Nouri al-Maliki, the candidate of the Coordination Framework for forming the next government, calling on the Framework forces and all national forces to bear their historical responsibilities and firmly confront any attempt to undermine the independent Iraqi decision .
The movement said in a statement issued by it and reported by Shafaq News Agency, “What was issued by US President Donald Trump in terms of signals and statements that affect the right of the Iraqi people and their political forces to choose their prime minister, away from dictates and pressures, not only reveals the true face of American policies when they conflict with the will of the people, but also confirms that the slogans of democracy and the rights of peoples are only used as selective tools and not as fixed principles .”
The movement pointed out that “these statements remove all the pretexts behind which some political forces hide, raising slogans of the independence of the Iraqi decision from foreign agendas, while they talk about equal friendly relations with the United States, while the facts reveal the falsity of this claim .”
The movement affirmed in its statement that “the position of the Iraqi Prime Minister is a purely sovereign matter, to be decided exclusively through constitutional frameworks and national will, not through messages from abroad, lobby deals, or calculations of interests that transcend borders .”
The movement called on “the forces of the coordinating framework and all national forces to bear their historical responsibilities, to firmly confront any attempt to undermine the independent Iraqi decision, and to unify the political position in a way that preserves the dignity and prestige of the state, and protects the democratic path from tampering and internationalization .”
She stressed that “this blatant interference should be used as an opportunity to unify national efforts, strengthen the principle of sovereignty and independence of Iraqi decision-making, and strictly adhere to constitutional frameworks in selecting the Prime Minister and senior positions in the state,” reiterating that “the preoccupation of political forces with their narrow interests only leads to exposing the state to humiliation and violating its sovereignty .”
The movement concluded its statement by noting that “Iraq is not an open arena for the experiments of others, and it will only be governed by the will of its people, no matter how numerous the pressures and how varied the tools used .”
The Islamic Dawa Party had warned earlier on Wednesday that the Coordination Framework was opening a “loophole” in its decision that could drag the country into further complications, while recalling the days of bombings and assassinations, in response to US President Donald Trump’s statement rejecting Nouri al-Maliki’s nomination for the premiership .
Nouri al-Maliki, leader of the State of Law Coalition, also announced his categorical rejection of US President Donald Trump’s statements regarding his nomination for the Iraqi premiership, stressing that he will continue to run based on the decision of the Coordination Framework .
This stance comes amid escalating domestic political reactions to US President Donald Trump’s statements regarding the nomination of Maliki to head the next government .
Trump said Tuesday evening, in a post on the Truth Social platform, that the return of former Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to the premiership is “something that should not be allowed,” considering that Iraq “slid into poverty and chaos” during his previous term .
Trump added that the United States would stop providing aid to Iraq if Maliki were re-elected, warning that this would undermine Iraq’s chances of “success, prosperity, or freedom,” and concluded his post by saying: “Let’s make Iraq great again .”
The Shiite Coordination Framework announced last Saturday evening, January 24, its nomination of former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to head the next government .
