Tom Barrack, US President Donald Trump’s envoy to Syria, stressed on Monday evening that any government installed in Iraq with Iranian support “will not be successful,” also ruling out the possibility of it having a partnership with Washington.

Barak said in a post on the “X” platform, which was followed by Shafaq News Agency, that he had “a fruitful telephone call this evening with Kurdish leader Masoud Barzani to discuss the situation in Syria and the importance of maintaining the ceasefire and ensuring humanitarian aid to those in need, especially in Kobani.”

Regarding Iraq, Barak explained that “the American position remains clear. Any government installed with the support of Iran will not be successful, neither in meeting the aspirations of Iraqis or Syrians for a better future, nor in establishing an effective partnership with the United States.”

The US State Department announced earlier on Monday that Secretary of State Marco Rubio had a telephone conversation with outgoing Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani, during which they discussed a number of security and political issues of mutual interest.

The ministry said in a statement that Rubio “emphasized that an Iranian-controlled government cannot successfully put Iraq’s own interests first, keep Iraq out of regional conflicts, or promote a mutually beneficial partnership between the United States and Iraq.”

Last Saturday, January 24, the Coordination Framework presented Nouri al-Maliki (75 years old), the leader of the State of Law Coalition and former Iraqi Prime Minister, as a candidate for the next government, thus bringing him back to the forefront of the Iraqi political scene.
