On Monday, MP Ahmed Al-Hajj, from the Kurdistan Justice Bloc, ruled out the election of the president in tomorrow’s session in the first round due to the number of candidates for the position, indicating that the second round will be a competition between the Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Patriotic Union.

Al-Hajj told Shafaq News Agency that “the House of Representatives has set tomorrow, Tuesday, as the date for electing the President of the Republic of Iraq, but in my opinion, in the first round, none of the 19 candidates will be able to obtain enough votes from the members of parliament.”

He explained that “the second round of the presidential election will still be between the Kurdistan Democratic Party candidate and the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan candidate, and at that time the blocking third can be used if one of the candidates does not get enough votes to qualify for the victory.”

Al-Hajj pointed out that “Tuesday is the deadline according to the constitutionally specified period for electing the President of the Republic, and the election session cannot be postponed to another day.”

The media department of the Iraqi parliament published yesterday evening, Sunday, the schedule for the eighth session scheduled to be held next Tuesday, January 27, which includes one item, “electing the president of the republic,” and will begin at eleven o’clock in the morning.

Earlier on Sunday, the Speaker of Parliament, Hebat al-Halbousi, set next Tuesday as the date for holding a session to elect the new President of the Republic of Iraq.

The Iraqi Parliament Presidency announced in the middle of this month the names of the candidates who met the legal requirements to run for the position of President of the Republic of Iraq, based on the provisions of Article (4) of the Law on the Provisions of Nomination for the Position No. (8) of 2012, and their number reached 15 candidates.

Later, the Federal Court ruled on the appeals of the candidates for the position, and reinstated 4 names as candidates for the position, bringing the final number to 19 candidates.
