The General Company for Grain Trade confirmed on Monday that the quantity of local wheat crop stored in the company’s sites spread throughout Iraq is estimated at about 4 million 200 thousand tons, which is a quantity sufficient to cover Iraq’s share of flour within the ration card for a whole year.
The company’s general manager, Haider Nouri Al-Karawi, told Shafaq News Agency that “the wheat stock available at the General Company for Grain Trade is sufficient to secure the citizens’ needs for flour for a full year, and this stock will not be affected by any financial crisis if one exists, as the company is capable of overcoming any emergency that the country may go through, God forbid.”
He added that “Iraq has the ability to withstand any exceptional circumstances thanks to the available strategic stock of wheat,” explaining that “this stock gives the country a margin of food security that enables it to deal with potential crises with confidence and stability.”
Regarding the rumors about providing foreign aid, Al-Karawi denied any intention to provide the local wheat crop as aid to Syria or the Republic of Lebanon, stressing that “this file is completely stopped, and the news circulating in this regard is inaccurate and is not based on official decisions.”
He explained that “there is a decision issued by the Council of Ministers stipulating the sale of surplus local wheat quantities at a price of four hundred and twenty thousand dinars per ton,” noting that “this decision does not prevent the export of wheat to neighboring countries in the event of official purchase offers from countries such as the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, or other Arab and regional countries.”
