The spokesman for the State of Law Coalition, Aqeel al-Fatlawi, confirmed on Sunday that the coordination framework had finalized the nomination of the prime minister within the constitutional timeframe. He indicated that the failure of some parties to vote for Maliki did not signify rejection, but rather reflected reservations that could be resolved. Speaking
to Al-Maalomah, al-Fatlawi stated, “Those who did not vote for Maliki had reservations about certain details, not a rejection of him personally.” He explained that “these reservations are resolvable and will not hinder Maliki’s confirmation in parliament.”
He added that “Maliki will pass very easily in the House of Representatives, as Iraq today needs a prime minister with the qualities of strength and decisiveness in governing the country.” He pointed out that “Iraq in 2026 is completely different from Iraq in 2014 in terms of circumstances, challenges, and political and security realities,” emphasizing that “there is no veto against Maliki, neither from Iran, nor the United States, nor even from the religious establishment.”
He clarified that “the viewpoint of some Sunni forces does not represent the full spectrum of Sunni opinions,” noting that “Maliki remains the closest and most influential figure to the resistance factions, which grants him significant political and popular weight in the coming phase.”
Al-Fatlawi concluded by emphasizing that “the next phase requires strong leadership capable of managing complex issues both domestically and internationally, qualities possessed by Maliki.”
