Member of the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Mahma Khalil, confirmed today, Sunday, that the Democratic Party will enter with its candidate in the session to elect the President of the Republic, noting that all meetings with the Patriotic Union have failed.
Khalil told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “the Democratic Party sought to activate this constitutional institution, which was present only nominally and neglected in previous sessions,” noting that the party’s candidate is Fuad Hussein, the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Iraq, due to his competence, experience, and well-known political personality, and because he is supported by the party.
He added that “Fuad Hussein was able, during a complex and dangerous regional phase, to prove himself,” considering that “the Democratic Party candidate is the most acceptable compared to the other candidates.”
Khalil noted that “all Kurdish political blocs have the right to nominate whomever they deem suitable.”
He denied “the existence of any final agreement with the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, despite previous understandings that were not finalized due to demands he described as exceeding the electoral entitlement and the actual number of votes.”
He explained that “the Democratic Party has understandings with the Shiite and Sunni components and the rest of the political forces,” noting that “political delegations visited Erbil before heading to Baghdad to preserve constitutional entitlements.”
