Economic expert Abbas Al-Shatri confirmed today that the repercussions of the unplanned expansion in government spending on projects have caused a clear disruption in public finances and led to real difficulties in securing funding for employee salaries.
Al-Shatri told Al-Maalouma that “directing excessive spending towards projects, without a precise balance with fixed obligations, has plunged public finances into a funding crisis, which has directly impacted the issue of employee salaries, and forced the government to resort to emergency decisions from the Economic Council.”
He added that “the decisions of the Economic Council were supposed to be taken at the beginning of the government’s term and in parallel with the launch of projects, not at later stages. Also, the reduction of allocations came in a sharp and ill-considered manner, which caused clear harm to the functional class.”
Al-Shatri questioned “why the austerity measures are focused only on employees, while the three presidencies, special grades, and high privileges are excluded,” considering that “the lack of fairness in distributing the burdens of the crisis has deepened the state of popular discontent.”
He pointed out that “economic experts were not seriously consulted until the end of the government’s term was near, which made the economic solutions ineffective and turned them into belated solutions that do not address the root causes of the problem.”
Al-Shatri concluded by emphasizing that “any genuine financial reform requires foresight, fairness in decision-making, and a balanced distribution of burdens,” warning that continuing the current approach could exacerbate the financial crisis and present the government with even greater challenges in the coming period.
