The meeting of the Coordination Framework forces scheduled for Saturday evening is now threatened with postponement due to the continued disagreements between some leaders, as well as receiving international messages stressing the need to choose a non-controversial figure to head the next government.

Since the leaks about al-Maliki’s nomination for the next government, the coordination framework has failed to hold any meetings related to the government formation file, and its meetings have been limited to other files, including the security aspect.

A source within the framework told Shafaq News Agency that there is a general trend within the Shiite House to transform the coordination framework into a “political institution,” led by whoever enjoys the consensus of the framework’s forces.

According to the source, regional and international messages stressed the need to choose a non-controversial figure to head the next government, which prompted influential leaders within the Shiite community to demand a review of the candidates’ names, in order to achieve balance in the political process and to keep pace with developments in the region.

According to the source, a compromise candidate may be chosen, supported or adopted by one of the forces with the highest parliamentary and political weight, noting that the nature of the plan taking place in the region confirms Iraq’s centrality in the regional and international scenes, which necessitates choosing a figure acceptable to all parties.

The source concluded by saying that “there is a trend among all the forces of the Coordination Framework to transform the framework into an expanded political institution, headed by a figure who enjoys the support of all the forces, with a general leadership and an internal system that regulates inter-factional relations, while the name of this institution will be agreed upon later.”

The Financial Times revealed on Friday that the United States has been pressuring senior Iraqi politicians in recent weeks to form a government that does not include representatives of Iranian-backed armed groups, through threats that include economic measures such as reducing the supply of dollars sent in cash in exchange for Iraq’s oil sales.

According to the British newspaper, American officials, during their meetings with prominent Iraqi political leaders tasked with forming the next government in recent weeks, pushed for the presentation of a credible plan to disarm Iranian-backed armed groups quickly.

According to the Financial Times report, tensions with Washington escalated after the election last month of Adnan Faihan, a former member of Asaib Ahl al-Haq, who now leads its political wing, as first deputy speaker of parliament, and they demanded that he be replaced before any further action is taken.
