A report by the US-based Defense Block website, specializing in military affairs, revealed on Thursday that a report issued by the South Korean brokerage firm Kyom on January 22nd stated that Hyundai Rotem is in serious talks to export its K2 main battle tank to several countries in addition to Poland.
The report, translated by the Information Agency, stated that “in a research note, Lee Han-gyeol, an analyst at Kyom Securities, wrote that Hyundai Rotem is in export talks with Iraq, Peru, Romania, and Saudi Arabia as part of its efforts to diversify its defense export markets. The report indicates that these talks come after the company delivered a large quantity of K2 tanks to Poland and reflect continued foreign demand for South Korean land combat systems.”
The report added that “Iraq is considering purchasing up to 250 K2 tanks as part of a program to replace older armored vehicles. A high-level Iraqi delegation visited Hyundai Rotem factories last summer, and a contract worth approximately $6.5 billion is expected to be signed later this year. There has been no official confirmation from the Iraqi government or Hyundai Rotem.”
It continued, “Romania has been identified as a potential customer. According to Qium Securities, the Romanian government allocated a budget of approximately €6.5 billion in the second half of last year for a next-generation tank program aimed at acquiring 216 main battle tanks. The report describes the K2 as one of the leading candidates for the program, alongside other Western designs.”
The report noted that “the K2 Black Panther is equipped with a 120mm smoothbore gun, advanced fire control systems, and effective protection options, and is designed for both conventional and high-intensity operations.”
