Security expert Qatari al-Samarmad confirmed on Sunday that Ain al-Assad Air Base in western Anbar is now without US combat forces for the first time in over 22 years.
Al-Samarmad told Al-Maalomah News Agency that “US forces have evacuated all their combat troops stationed at Ain al-Assad Air Base in the al-Baghdadi district of Hit, western Anbar, towards Harir Air Base in Erbil and their bases outside Iraq for the first time in over 23 years. This withdrawal is considered suspicious, as they had previously evacuated their soldiers two months ago and then suddenly redeployed their forces.”
He added that “high-ranking security officials have arrived at Ain al-Assad Air Base to attend the official handover ceremony of the base building to the Jazeera Operations Command.” He explained that “the security officials will hold a ceremony, attended by high-ranking security leaders, to receive Ain al-Assad Air Base for the first time since its occupation by US forces in 2003.”
He confirmed that “security officials have arrived at the base building in preparation for receiving it from the US forces.”
