Information/Report..
In light of the escalating political activity within the corridors of the coordination framework, and the increasing leaks about the shape of the next stage, attention is turning to how the equation of the premiership will be decided, amid indications of rearranging the cards within the Shiite house, and strenuous attempts to avoid any division that may threaten the cohesion of the alliance that holds the reins of political decision-making.
These moves come at a time when the Iraqi scene is witnessing increasing internal and external pressures, requiring more balanced management, the ability to contain economic and security challenges, as well as restoring trust between competing forces.
In this context, MP Hussein Al-Ankoushi, from the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, revealed in a statement to Al-Maalouma that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani personally and voluntarily withdrew from running for a new term in favor of the leader of the State of Law Coalition, Nouri Al-Maliki, stressing that this decision was not the result of pressure from within the coordination framework.
Al-Ankoushi explained that “Al-Sudani directed the Reconstruction and Development Coalition to support Al-Maliki’s nomination for the premiership during the next phase,” noting that “Al-Maliki has become a candidate supported by 81 MPs representing the Reconstruction and Development Coalition and the State of Law Coalition.”
He added that “the coordination framework did not impose this option on the Sudanese, but rather the decision came from a personal standpoint aimed at preserving the unity and cohesion of the framework,” stressing that “the political forces within the framework will not allow it to be dismantled or abandoned under any circumstances.”
In the same context, Zuhair al-Jalabi, a member of the State of Law Coalition, confirmed that the majority of the forces within the framework have agreed on al-Maliki assuming the premiership, noting that the percentage of support within the framework has reached about 80 percent.
Al-Jalabi told Al-Maalouma that “Al-Maliki has a long political experience and a clear ability to manage internal balances, in addition to his regional and international relations that enable him to open channels of understanding with various parties,” indicating that “these factors make him a suitable choice to lead the next stage.”
He added that “talk of sharp divisions within the Shiite bloc does not reflect the actual political reality,” stressing that “the main leaders within the framework have not registered any positions rejecting al-Maliki’s assumption of this position.”
Observers believe that this relative consensus reflects a serious attempt to reproduce a political leadership capable of controlling the internal rhythm and absorbing the tensions that the scene witnessed during the past months, in light of escalating popular and economic pressures and the complexity of regional issues.
Experts also point out that Al-Sudani’s withdrawal from the candidacy may be interpreted as a message of calm within the framework, and an attempt to ward off the specter of division, especially with the approach of constitutional deadlines and the country entering a sensitive political phase.
While positions and statements within the coordination framework are rapidly evolving, the battle for the premiership appears to be taking on a more conciliatory tone than a confrontational one. This is an attempt to preserve the unity of the coalition and avoid any instability that could negatively impact the country’s stability, amidst anticipation of what the coming days will bring in terms of understandings or political surprises.
