The Information Agency / Baghdad –
On Saturday, Hussein al-Ankoushi, a member of the Reconstruction and Development Coalition, confirmed that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani had personally withdrawn his candidacy for the premiership in favor of Nouri al-Maliki, leader of the State of Law Coalition. He indicated that this decision was not the result of pressure from the Coordination Framework.
Speaking to the Information Agency, al-Ankoushi said, “Al-Sudani directed the Reconstruction and Development Coalition to support al-Maliki’s nomination for prime minister in the upcoming phase.” He explained that “al-Maliki is now the candidate of 81 MPs representing the Reconstruction and Development Coalition and the State of Law Coalition.”
He added, “The Coordination Framework did not force al-Sudani to withdraw his candidacy; rather, the decision was voluntary and personal on his part.” He emphasized that “the political forces within the framework will not allow its disintegration or abandonment under any circumstances.”
He stressed that “the upcoming phase requires maintaining the unity and cohesion of the Coordination Framework to ensure political stability and proceed with forming the government based on clear understandings among all parties.”
