Political analyst Abbas Ghadeer confirmed on Thursday that the nomination of Nouri al-Maliki, the candidate of the Coordination Framework, remains undecided due to divisions within political blocs regarding his candidacy for the premiership. He indicated that the unity, cohesion, and consensus of the Coordination Framework are more important than the selection of the candidate’s name itself.
Ghadeer told the Information Agency, “The lack of complete agreement within the Framework on a prime ministerial candidate does not mean that al-Maliki is not deserving of the position.” He explained that “the current stage requires the selection of a prime minister capable of addressing internal, regional, and international challenges, and forming a government with the necessary ability and competence, and one that enjoys the support of a strong political bloc.”
He added, “It is essential to consider the opinion of the religious authorities as well as the international situation when deciding on a prime ministerial candidate.” He clarified that “the situation in the region is volatile, and a prime minister cannot be chosen without a thorough analysis of both regional and international issues.”
He pointed out that “both the international and domestic situations are going through a difficult phase, and these factors must be taken into account before making a final decision regarding the prime ministerial candidate,” noting that “there are more than one political bloc and leading figure within the coordination framework who oppose al-Maliki’s nomination at the present time.”
