The independent politician Ayed al-Hilali confirmed on Wednesday that Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s concession to Nouri al-Maliki is a unique and unprecedented development in the political process, indicating that al-Sudani now clearly supports al-Maliki’s candidacy for a third term as prime minister.
Al-Hilali told Al-Maalomah, “A new alliance has recently emerged between the State of Law Coalition and the Reconstruction and Development and Foundation Alliances, reflecting early political arrangements for the post-election period.”
He added that “al-Sudani may receive sovereign ministries in return for this stance, in addition to dozens of government positions,” explaining that “the prime minister has established what could be called a new culture in political work, but at the same time, he has negatively impacted his political standing and set a precedent for himself.”
Al-Hilali explained that “Maliki, for his part, might return the favor to Al-Sudani and support his nomination for prime minister if there is no consensus on Maliki within the political framework,” noting that “the next phase will witness further alignments and alliances that will determine the shape of the next government.”
He concluded by saying that “these understandings reveal the extent of the political bargaining currently underway, far removed from the declared slogans.”
